Egg Quality and GLP-1s: Why Weight Loss and Fertility Nutrition Are Two Different Stages
GLP-1 medications like semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro) are now widely used for weight loss, and they are often assumed to improve fertility along the way. This has led to a common question in our clinic: if I am losing weight to prepare for pregnancy, am I also improving my egg quality?
The honest answer is not yet. We know that, when clinically indicated, losing 5 to 10 percent of body weight can improve cycle regularity, insulin function, and ovulation. But we do not yet have enough research on GLP-1 medications and egg quality specifically to say whether this also means better egg health. What we do know is that weight loss and fertility nutrition are two different phases, each with its own goal, and understanding what each one requires can help you plan your journey properly.
Weight Loss and Fertility Nutrition Are Not the Same Thing
It is easy to assume that losing weight and preparing your body for pregnancy are the same process. They are not, and mixing them up can leave you under-prepared for conception.
Weight loss is about a calorie deficit. This means eating less energy than your body uses, so you lose weight over time. A calorie deficit is not designed to build up nutrient stores or improve egg quality. In fact, a strict calorie deficit can sometimes work against these goals if it is not managed carefully.
Fertility nutrition is about something different. Instead of eating less, the focus shifts to eating well. This stage is about:
Increasing nutrient density, meaning more vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants per meal, not just fewer calories
Stabilising blood sugar levels, so your energy and hormones stay steady rather than spiking and crashing
Supporting steady energy throughout the day, which helps your hormones function properly and supports regular cycles
Eating in an anti-inflammatory style, with plenty of vegetables, oily fish, olive oil, nuts, and herbs and spices like turmeric and ginger
This means that once any planned weight loss is complete, your focus needs to shift. The goal is no longer eating less. It is eating in a way that actively nourishes your eggs and hormones.
Where GLP-1 Medications Fit In
If you are using a GLP-1 medication and planning a pregnancy, timing matters. Most guidance recommends stopping GLP-1 medications at least 2 to 3 months before you start actively trying to conceive, with a minimum washout period of 8 weeks for semaglutide.
We do not yet have direct research telling us how these medications affect egg quality specifically. What the research does tell us is that improving egg quality is less about what you cut out, and more about what you add in, through nutrient dense, blood sugar stable, anti-inflammatory eating. This is a good reason to treat weight loss and fertility preparation as separate stages, with a clear gap in between. Always make decisions about starting, stopping, or timing any medication with your prescribing doctor.
Why the 3 Months Before Conception Matter
Your eggs take about 3 months to fully mature before they are released. During this time, the egg is building up energy stores and responding to the nutrition, blood sugar levels, and hormone signals in your body.
This is why research points to a 3 month window as the key time to focus on egg quality, through nutrient dense, blood sugar stable, and anti-inflammatory eating. Three months is roughly how long it takes for these changes to reach the eggs that will be ready for conception.
Final Thoughts
If weight loss is part of your plan, treat it as its own stage, with a clear calorie deficit goal, completed well before you start trying to conceive. Once that stage is finished, and any required medication washout period has passed, shift into at least 3 months of dedicated fertility nutrition. This means eating more, not less, with a focus on nutrient density, stable blood sugar, and anti-inflammatory foods to give your eggs the best environment to mature.
